Project 1: Famous People, Familiar Faces – Diagrammatic Abstraction
The first project in this semester is to use pure and diagrammatic models to express the architectural idea. We are to obtain the following after this project :
1. Ability to identify master architects and their works
2. Understanding basic architectural compositions of solids, planes, lines and frames.
3. Ability to ‘diagram’ and analyse architectural work of selected architect
In a group of 6, we are required to investigate and formulate our findings into a set of 10 analysis diagrams (on A3 size paper) and 10 diagrammatic models (8 x 8 x 8 cm). The models should be precise and informative to express the analysis of the ideas hidden in the project assigned. The analysis is based on, but not limited to the following:
- organization of form
- organization of space
- circulation and paths
-space relationship
- spatial hierarchies
- context
- elements
For our group, we are assigned to analyse a local architecture - Roof Roof House by Ken Yeang.

Project 2: Introduction to Site Analysis + Pavilion @ National Botanical Garden Shah Alam
This is our first time doing architecture analysis on buildings and expressing our findings in diagrams. All of our member was cooperative, we distributed the workloads evenly, some are in charge of drawings while the others are responsible for the models. We had a great time doing research together in the library. We helped out each other as much as we could. I have learnt a lot from this project, it definitely increases my understanding in architecture, how these elements affect the space itself.
The aim of this project is to generate structure, form and space through architectural conceptualisation (which we are required to choose 2 ‘keywords’ from project 1), with the emphasis on the user requirement, ergonomics and site responding to develop an architectural proposition. We will be shown the importance of using the art of crafting and making: drawing(s) and model(s) as a critical design tool as part of the design process.
There are two tasks in this project :
First, as a group, we are required to conduct site analysis of the physical context both at a macro & micro level of the overall site. Collect data and record on the following using physical maps/diagrams: § Site plan (Site section, Site Boundaries, North Point, Contours) § Existing Structure (Significant Architectural Language/Feature, Adjacent building/structure building to remain/demolish) § Landscape (Natural features, Soil Condition, Surface Drainage, Existing vegetation) § Climatic Studies (Sun path, wind direction, rain) § Circulation pattern (pedestrian, vehicular) § Views and Vistas (Panoramic /spot in, out, approaching) § Activities (category -dry/wet, zoning, noise) § Case Studies (Perdana Canopy & The Bamboo Playhouse ) You are also required to do a site model of the respective site(s)
Second , in a pair, we are to design a pavilion (with a maximum volume of 30m3) for the purpose of relaxation and pleasure. It shall include other activity(s) such as meditation, observation, etc. in which furniture and equipment must fit and be incorporated into the design. This structure should correspond to the site that we have chosen. Adequate access, circulation and fenestration are mandatory.

Reflection :
As my first experience doing analysis on real site, this was definitely a pleasing one. We had fun during the process of making site models, as I have made some new friends too! Then, me and Bryan in a pair designed the pavilion together. I am glad that Bryan turns out to be my motivation, pushing me harder and harder each and everytime throughout the whole process. Even though we didnt really get good comments for our final design at last, we still obtained a lot from the project,.
Project 3 : Weekend Getaway
On our own, we are to further develop our project 2 into a Weekend Getaway at National Botanical Garden. A Weekend Getaway denotes ‘A place where one escapes for relaxation, recreation and vacation for a short period of time.’ This Weekend Getaway must function as habitable architectural spaces to enable the activity associated with living, dining, showering, cooking, storage and such within the built up space of 150 m2. The relationship between our design and the context is also important in making the Weekend Getaway unique to its landscape and activity.
The objectives of this project are:
• To introduce the notions of concepts, program and process in architectural design
• To introduce students’ to the understanding of user specific design requirements
• To introduce the notions of space, form and function in architectural design
• To introduce awareness of site specific design and the process of site analysis
