Project 1: Representing Me

For this ice breaking project, we have to generate ideas from self-identity through personal interests, preferences, attitude and personality. Then apply to an artwork worn on specific parts of the body, mostly parts of the body that is use for creativity and making. Artwork is to be worn on head (thinking), hand (making) and face (showing & expressing).

Reflection :

This is the my first project in the degree. I have learnt more about myself and tried to express my personality through an abstract artwork. There are some terms like design principal, design elements etc that are quite new to me, it has been a fun progress exploring them.

Project 2: Furnitecture

We were to worked in group of 6-8, producing a furniture as a full 1:1 scaled cardboard assembly and installation. We have to translate our personlaity and design interntions thru designing the furnitecture, furniture that transforms to architecture using cardboard and cardboard fittings and assemblies that has to be highly functional and usable.

The objectives of this assignment are as follows:

1. To further the student’s concern about elementary user needs

2. To introduce and create an awareness of the scale and proportion of the human body.

3. To create how human anthropometry and ergonomics relate to shape and the space.

4. To introduce the role of human behavior in shaping the space and dictating activities.

5. To introduce basic design principles and terminologies on deciding spatial and form configuration.

6. To create and work on full scale installation in order to further visualize efficiency, functionality, quality of space and articulation form.

Reflection :

As for this group project, I have learnt that communication among group members is important in order to produce a good outcome. From generating ideas to making models, our group managed to work well and cooperate with each other. Besides, I have developed an understanding of scale and proportion in relationship with body and space. I have learnt how anthropometrics shapes and relates to our furnitecture.

Project 3: Dream space for self

For the final project, we are required to design a space for the self by attaching it to the walls/surfaces of an imagined ‘city’ in an empty abandoned lot in between two buildings. The space is to fit a specific use (as a dream space: for viewing, space for contemplating, space for selfexploration, space for exercising, space for dreaming, space showcasing and so to speak a dream space for the user). We have to first produce an interesting narrative on our personality and define the theme of the space. This understanding is to be architecturally translated into a series of connected spaces (2-3 spaces) that successfully establishes the quality and articulation of the interior and of exterior design. Concept shall evidently show the experiential and spatial quality. We are also to consider how well design conforms to both the physical and non-physical requirements of the user.

The objectives of this assignment are as follows:

1. To further the students ability to create and develop a conceptual narrative.

2. To introduce and create awareness in understanding the dimensional requirements of the human body (anthropometrics and ergonomics).

3. To explore and apply basic design principles and terminologies.

4. To be able to consider objective and subjective parameters in the design process to create a space this is practical yet poetic.

5. To explore how the selection and application of materials in relation to the sensory experience of space.

6. To be able to select and make different study models (sketch, concept, diagram, section and development models)

Reflection :

This time, we have to apply what we have obtained from the first two project into our dreamspace. However, due to lack of fully understanding, i am not satisfied with my outcome. I have learnt to create a space that is just for myself and fullfill my needs.
