ARCHITECTURE, CULTURE AND HISTORY 1
A chronological survey of the developments of Western architecture from the beginning of time to the period of Enlightenment, with consideration of the intellectual, aesthetic, technological, political and economic factors which have influenced the design of buildings. These issues are explored with reference to major contemporary examples and the work and philosophy of significant exponents
PROJECT PART A: ONLINE GROUP FORUM
We were divided into group of five to do an in-depth research on a chosen historical building. The research we did has to be uploaded and posted on the online forum. The building that was chosen for our group is the church of San Giorgio Maggiore. A set of questions were assigned to us, each of us have to answer one of the questions provided. I was assigned to answer the second question, which is:
i. Where and when was the building built?
ii. How the context, building period and evolution makes the building historically significant and meaningful?

PROJECT PART B :
Precedent Study & Comparative Analyses
Journal
Using the information gathered in Part A of On-line Discussion Forum, we need to provide precedent study and comprehensive comparative sketch analysis of the building. We were required to generate an in-depth precedent analysis (of: Style, Form, Structure, Floor Layout, Interior, Exterior & Façade Elements, Circulation, Function, Social Impact) of the accounts listed below:
1. Related illustrative Architectural Historical Timeline in chronology order that highlights and explains the significant aspects of the building in Architecture History.
2. With reference to the timeline, generates comparative analysis of the building with the before and after architectural style.
3. With reference to the timeline explain the technology development and advancement related to the architecture of the building.
There are 3 types of sketch analysis that should be included:
i. Architectural Historical Timeline sketches
ii. Comparative analysis with the before and after architectural style
iii. Technology development and advancement

PROJECT PART C :
A2 ANALYSIS PRESENTATION BOARD
In this final project, we need to prepare an A2 Board Analysis that include:
A. Answers to the Precedent Study Analysis questions below:
1. How does the building reflect the spirit of the time and place for which it was built?
2. What are the initial ideas and the design concept?
3. How the initial ideas and the design concept affecting the architecture?
B. Conduct analysis of one of element selected from question 1 to 5 and to synthesize the design concept in Partí of question 6.
C. Illustration of Precedent Study Analysis in relation to the series of building conceptual elements listed below :
Analysis Sketches of:
i. Architect, Location Plan, Concept, Philosophies, Culture
ii. Building-Context connections: Site Plan, Site Section,
iii. 3D Mass-Context Study. Spatial Layout: Building Plan, Elevation, Sections;
iv. Social-spatial Experience /Subtractions Sketches/ Significant Architectural elements/concept: Geometric – v. 3D Architecture Elements & Structures Study, Details Façade & Sections, 3D Details,
This time, I was required to do an analysis on spatial organization for the presentation board. My board should include the following information:
i. Spatial planning & Landscape/Site Siting
ii. Building sequence and process
iii. .Public vs. private
iv. Axis, Symmetry/Asymmetry & balance
v. Repetitive to unique
vi. Additive and subtractive
vii. Hierarchy

Reflection
From these projects, I have learnt a lot about our assigned historical building which is the church of San Giorgio Maggiore, as well as its Renaissance architecture style. The transformation of architecture style in different era is so interesting that it triggers my curiousity, making me want to learn more about all those styles. Comparing to the modern buildings which emphasise on simplicity nowadays, historical buildings are more complicated designed and mostly following a specific set of rules at the time until a new architecture style is created and widely accepted.
